I've always had a liking for building things. I've been in the IT/networking business for about 30 years with the same employer and will be looking to retire soon. I find woodworking relaxing and enjoyable (till I make a mistake !!) I've done tons of home improvement projects, flipped houses and helped friends with their projects as well. I also have a bit of a tool fetish!!! When we go to flea markets and craft fairs I have always been impressed by hand-crafted woodworking projects like turned bowls, band saw boxes and cutting boards and have wondered if I could do that?
A couple of years ago, my wife was signing up to take a class at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. She wondered if I I saw anything interesting during the same week. I looked over the class list and decided to sign up for a beginners wood-turning class given by Jerry Kermode. I loved it! Fortunately, I have a very supportive wife and was encourage to buy a lathe and other assorted tools to get started. I've done a bunch of business with WoodCraft & Rockler this past year and have a pretty good setup now. To me, turning a bowl and not knowing what kind of grain character you might discover is exciting. I am also doing end grain cutting boards and band saw boxes. I never had much experience with a band saw, and was almost ready to sell it as quickly as I bought it. But after doing some reading and taking the time to get it properly setup, I'm glad I didn't unload it !!
Most of the items I've made have been given as gifts to family & friends. Now I'm starting to build up an inventory of projects and hope to be doing some craft fairs this spring and summer and eventually supplementing my retirement. Not doing it for the money, just want to support my hobby and for the enjoyment of creation.
